An Injury Set Back For Hudson-Odoi And Update On Kovacic

The Chelsea England player is set for a longer spell on the sidelines after a set back in training yesterday.

Callum Hudson-Odoi aggravated his hamstring injury in his first training session back with Chelsea’s first team yesterday, Frank Lampard has confirmed, with the head coach also confirming Mateo Kovacic will be out of Sunday’s Premier League game against Everton at Stamford Bridge.

Willian also faces a late fitness test on the achilles injury he sustained against Liverpool in Tuesday night’s FA Cup fifth-round win, while Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Christian Pulisic both played in a behind closed doors game at Cobham this morning and are nearing returns but lacking match fitness.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference today before Carlo Ancelotti’s return to West London on Sunday, Lampard said of Hudson-Odoi: “He had an injury set back yesterday. He will be having a scan this afternoon and will be out longer than initially expected

Lampard said it is frustrating for the young player but insisted that he was not rushed back and all tests had indicated that he would be fit to return to training.

“It’s tough for the player by him,” the head coach said. “He wasn’t rushed back. All signs were he was fine to train and re-injured in hsi first training session. Frustrating because as a young boy he is keen to play but it’s frustrating for us as a team. We have the worst injuries of top group in the premier league and table, lots of players. We’re working against that to get the best results.”

As for Kovacic and Willian’s achilles issues, he added: “Kovacic isn’t fit for the s6, out of the weekend but hopefully not long after that. Willian, we will assess him. He is a question mark for Sunday.”

Tammy Abraham is expected to return by the end of this month while no timescale has been set for N’Golo  Kante return.

There was a more promising update on Loftus-Cheek and Pulisic who both featured in a friendly game at Cobham this morning.

“We had an in-house game in which Ruben and Christian took part in,” Lampard added. “It’s great to see both Christian and Ruben get minutes… a big step forward. I just watched it but I’ll find out how it went after.

Ruben- Cheek played half that game and is short of match fitness, which he has said himself. There is work to be done with Ruben.”
